The World of Astraea

W.I.P

Astraea is a world of wonder and beauty. Vast crystal caves run through a planet littered with the debris of celestial explorers, and the remnants of people long gone. Magic lives and breathes among and beneath the stars, filling the world with diverse people and cultures. And on this world, in caves lit by glittering scales, roam dragons. Wise, mighty… and very queer.

Most notable among them is Calia, a Stormbringer whose hoard is comprised entirely of the thing she values most: Love. And who better to help her fill her hoard than the various people she treasures?
One of those people is Nomi, a young trans druid who learns from Calia just how worthy of love and adoration she is, and how good she is at providing the same for others.

Astraea can be breathtaking, but also dark and dangerous. Old magics and monsters roam here, and one dragon alone cannot survive. How fortunate it is, then, that a dragon’s love knows no bounds, and Nomi gets to share in it with Calia's other girlfriends.

In this dark and beautiful world, they support each other and Calia, their guiding star who brings their hearts together and makes their dreams come true.
Dreams of love, of safety, and of family.

Astraea Lore

World Terms and Distinctions:

Animal/Beast: Naturally occurring creature, mainly harmless.

Arcanotech: The study/use of magic derived from technological means.

Druidic Magic: Naturally occurring magic that is rumored to have a will of its own.

Dread Magic: Unnatural magic twisted into shapes that are just wrong. Frequently mutates and creates more and more aberrations.

Humans: The primary sapient species on the planet next to dragons. Exist in the magic-touched and untouched variety.

Magic-touched: Humans that have been touched by the primal magics such as The Wilds, The Betweenlands, The Fell, The Elemental. Sub-types of humans that have adopted their own terms for their own cultures (Orcs, Fey/Feywalkers, Fellkin, Elementals/Jenari).

        Dragon Abilities/Cultural Terms

        Alpha:

A term given to the leader of a dragon clan. (Unlike bad wolf science from the 70s and certain… problematic tropes, this does not refer to the dragon having power over the clan.) It signifies that this dragon will be the first to be approached by other clans in territory disputes, as well as the first to go hunting, first to go hungry or sacrifice for the clan, and first to fight, bleed, and— if necessary —die for their clan.

        Hoards:

Dragons like to collect things. These things may be physical or intangible, and they may hold more or less perceived value (such as gems vs random pretty rocks). In some cases, sapient creatures such as humans can be part of a dragon’s hoard. This, by draconic law, has to be a consensual and mutually beneficial agreement.

        Territory:

Dragon clans have the right to claim a territory. They are then responsible for the people therein, as well as for the laws of their kind being upheld, and reporting any danger to the greater planetary community.

Also, they just really like having their own space. This rock? Mine. Hands off.

        Link:

Dragons among the same generation are mentally linked. The strength of the link can vary, depending on the exact kind of relation of the dragons as well as their mental state.

The link is a vital part of dragon culture and very important to a dragon’s health.

        Claim (romantic):

Dragons call the act of stating their feelings a claim. Making your claim is an integral part of any relationship, as communication is vital.

        Bondmate/Bonded:

Dragons can choose a member of a different clan as their bondmate. This is a deep and meaningful ritual binding the dragons as lifelong allies. It can and often does turn romantic, but romance is not a requirement.

        Mark:

A dragon marks their bondmate with a special scar. Understanding of this mark is instinctive for pretty much all dragons.

        Assimilation:

Dragons can assimilate matter into their body. This can be used to store items, reconstruct them, destroy them, or integrate them into a dragon’s body. It is usually advised not to do this with organic matter, and requires practice and skill.

        Fire:

Fire refers to the inner power source of a dragon. Legend says it can be transferred, granting immortality to mortals, as well as incredible strength.

        Breath:

Breath refers to a dragon’s fire being channeled into a destructive form. It may appear as actual fire, as a bolt of lighting, or a droning death ray that disintegrates all in its path. Avoid at all costs.

        Blackblood:

Battle dragons that have earned their special classification for service on the front lines. The term originates from a clan of Stormbringers returning from every battle so crusted in their own blood that it appeared like a black carapace.

        Human form:

Dragons can compress their bodies into different shapes. A human form can be retained for a number of hours, though some draconic traits may remain, such as eyes or sharp teeth. Those with a keen eye can spot them by the texture of their skin.

Remaining in human form puts great stress on a dragon.

        Half dragon form:

A difficult to attain and maintain balance between two absolute states. The half dragon form grants the relative size of a human without extra stress accumulation, while also retaining the strength, wings, scales, tail and claws of a dragon. It is usually several feet taller than the fully human form, though heights can vary in both from time to time.

        Human skin:

An incredibly valuable and rare item granting a dragon the ability to remain in human form for an unlimited amount of time without extra accumulation of stress. Extremely hard to craft, and only given to the highest ranking dragons on the planet.
